Case Study Notes

  • My newsletter naming strategy was built to train audiences on the value proposition upon opening. The weekly newsletter was named “Three Things” and centered on stories that Inspired, Informed or Connected them to happenings at the organization. When they received a “One Thing” newsletter, they knew it was an in-depth dive into one specific topic, which in this case was about professional development.

  • While I love an artful headline, in newsletters, I tend to lead with the “so what"?” factor for our busy employees

  • When I joined the USO, focus groups I facilitated continuously associated prior internal communications with words like “stuffy, old school, unapproachable and boring.” I encouraged our leaders to embrace a bit of personality, so I sprinkled fun GIFs in many communications. With our workforce being more than 65 percent female, this GIF from the empowering film Million Dollar Baby, was selected. Later, down the newsletter, I kept the boxing theme but threw a bone to Gen X and men with the Rocky GIF before closing out with the optimism of a Ted Lasso GIF. Everything we do should have a reason. Our internal audiences deserve the same thoughtfulness as our external customers.

  • When you want an audience to take action, we need to identify the most prevalent obstacles to that action. These three areas were identified in our research as how employees most commonly articulated their apprehensions to starting professional development pathways: Where do I start? What is available? Isn’t it all a cookie cutter curriculum?

  • Whenever possible, I like to directly show audiences other pieces of related communications that were sent or that are coming. In internal communications, people saying “I am tired of hearing about XYZ” is almost a sign of success. Duplicity on target audiences is a must in the modern workplace.

  • In addition to the benefits, I like to give audiences a taste of the experiences we are asking them to have as well.

  • Here, I highlight multiple topics to hook different people, but with the brevity needed for people to want more details and get them further down the engagement chain.

  • Once he had rebuilt our intranet and provided good governance, I had the advantage of consistently driving users to our SharePoint sites on our intranet, USO Connect. Consistency in calls-to-action is the goal!
